Esther Planas is an independent artist, however, at the start of her career, she was taken by the short-lived Madrid based Gallery Ignacio Varez, with the same name as its owner and director, where she exhibited one solo show in 1993. The gallery must have lasted around 6 years in total closing down around 1996 due to the health problems of its director and owner.
From 1994 till 1996 Planas was taken by editor and writer Carles Prats to become part of its stable of artists in his short-lived project space and small gallery, La Central de Energía, in Barcelona. Planas had a solo show and was also part of a collective show. The Gallery closed down, as its owner and director stated that the business side of being a gallerist was not what he could cope with before moving on to making documentary films and working for publicity.
Planas moved to London in 1998 and there she started her long term relation and project Five Years, with her then-partner, now collaborating member, of the research space, exhibition based space run by artists as a cooperative, in its most recent format, since 2006.
In 2004 she was asked to be part of the stable of artists for the gallery Blow de la Barra, by her curator friend Pablo León de la Barra. She stayed (in waiting) as an artist of the gallery Blow de la Barra, run between Detmar Blow and Pablo León de la Barra, till the gallery closed down in 2007, due to economic failure. She was never given a show either collective or solo, during those years.
In 2007 Planas was invited by gallerist Eugenia Mont from Barcelona's Poble Nou art space, Espai Ubu, for her solo show, which was very successful. Sadly the gallery closed its doors in 2010.
Since then Planas remains active and independent, open to collaborations and conversations with curators, artists, and practitioners from various fields about which her CV details of the activities keep the information as well as most of the sections of this website which is more like an archive.
